I Left My Heart in Green Valley

Green Valley, California

I am no respecter of trips. By that I mean I enjoy a road trip along the Columbia River gorge to visit my family in Idaho nearly as much as flying somewhere exotic. So this was a great week for me. My daughter, Jasmine, and I drove from Olympia, Washington, to Green Valley, California. Most people wouldn’t think an eleven-hour drive was “fun” but we had a great time. I always love driving through Oregon–it’s so beautiful and GREEN!  Jasmine kept us entertained with NPR podcasts while attending to her baby.

Arriving at my friend Holly’s home is liking stepping into paradise. Her lovely house is nestled among trees. I feel like I’m waking up in a tree house!  Holly is a fabulous cook and has a lovely, calming demeanor.  Her husband is as entertaining as any standup comic. So it’s a guaranteed good time.

imageWe spent five happy years in Green Valley and I became accustomed to cooking with fresh rosemary, lemons, and olive oil year-round. We enjoyed many fabulous meals in Napa and Sonoma and I walked hundreds of miles up and down Green Valley Road.  I got accustomed to buying fresh fruits and vegetables for rock bottom prices at Larry’s Produce.  We had company regularly, and I happily played the tour guide.  I took friends to San Francisco to visit landmarks from Hitchcock’s Vertigo, took them up and down Napa Valley and to the Calistoga mud baths if they were willing, and to Marin County, Sonoma, and Angel Island.  I don’t think I’ve ever been happier!

imageSo it was a walk down memory lane this week.  Howard and Holly treated us to a lovely dinner at the Green Valley Country Club.  We tasted olive oils and visited the Jelly Belly Factory, saw friends, and even visited Larry’s.  On our last evening we were treated to a memorable dinner at Allegria’s in Napa.

I drove home to Olympia yesterday, and am finalizing plans for my Austria/Czechoslovakia trip.  More on that later!
